US digs deep to end Victorious!

Chris Lodgson kisses his medal as the United States finished number 19 after a victory over Hungary in their final match. Lodgson's New York teammate, Dexter Burnett scored a hat trick and added a game winning penalty kick to cap a come from behind victory. Ebony Wright started the match and was afterwards recognized by the announcer as one of only four females to integrate the tournament.

The game followed a frustratingly familiar theme for the United States: Pretty build-up, great hustle, and no ability to put the ball away. Trailing 3-1 at the half, the team still felt confident since it had the better of the play. Dexter took control and defied his 47 years with incredible work rate.

The night before we all sat around the dinner table in a Milan cafe and shared our unforgettable moments of the trip. Some went back to our exhibitions in New York with the Promotion Factory and our ceremony at Cipriani's, some of the players couldn't help but mention the beautiful italian they had met, and everyone agreed our trip to Venice was beyond anything they could have imagined. Still it was the victory over France that most people agreed was the best expression of all we had accomplished and overcome together as a group. That victory against a goliath-like opponent in a must win game after trailing by early goals validated everyone. When we won today, the pride on the our faces, the hugs, and rejoicing evinced the self esteem and sense of accomplishment that this group deservedly feels. Thanks to all of you who made this possible. We look forward to keeping you updated going forward with a few profiles and more photos of our athletes and their rise out of homelessness and poverty.

The final match of the Homeless World Cup 2009 is moments away. Portugal will play the Ukraine in a match televised on Italian TV.

US to compete for 19th place in the World

Street Soccer USA and it's team from homeless service agencies across the country have already done better than any previous American team. Despite frustrations in the latest matches, The US team has secured their spot in the top 20, and will battle Germany or Hungry for the 19th spot.

Meanwhile, top prize is favored to go to the world soccer powers Brazil, restoring order to the Homeless World Cup which has been dominated in the past by non World Cup winner: Russia, Poland, Scotland, Afghanistan.

Our players have once again raised the bar for US participation. So far each year the team has climbed. In 2005 they finished last, in the 2006, penultimate, in 2007 31st, and last year 29th. The US has risen despite an increased level of competition overall in the tournament. Congrats to our players. Cheer them on as they strive to finish strong tomorrow.

USA Wins to secure place in top 20!

Carlos Valdez was sharp again today, adding three goals to Antoine Lagarde's two and one from Alvin Soto for the USA. The US played a tough Austrian squad, but persevered in the end. Alvin and Carlos each had chances to win it with easy shots in the final seconds, but neither could find the net.

Wes Colter, again, was called upon to rescue the Street Soccer USA. Antoine was there to help. Antoine scored the first goal and Austria was not denied either. Both Carlos and Alvin failed to convert, but two big saves from Colter gave Antoine another opportunity, which he made good on. The cycle repeated itself, and on the third go around Antoine put the US up for the third consecutive time. Colter forced the Austrian penalty taker wide right, and though he passed the keeper, he couldn't steer his shot between the posts. The ball bounced off the wall wide right. The US team stormed onto the field victorious.

Next match will be against tent-mates South Africa. This winner goes to the final of the City of Milan Cup. On the other side of the semi-final is Germany and Malawi.

Trophy Stage

The US battles Austria today in the first round of the trophy stage. The winner will play the winner between South Africa and Romania this afternoon. The quality of all these teams is immense: While we did not qualify for the top 8 spots, many of the teams in our current bracket could have been world champions with some better luck. France, whom the US defeated in the first stage of the tournament qualified for the final eight in the Homeless World Cup championship. This shows the degree of parity. Speaking with Chris Lodgson this morning, he confirmed that the team is proud of their effort and achievement thus far. The frustration has been in losing the scoring touch, but the team also feels that they have not suffered for lack of effort or team focus.

The coaches feel likewise. A few more days to train and we might have solved a couple more problems on the pitch, but in the end we have adjusted well to the high level of competition. The structure and strategy has put the team in a good position to reach their potential on the the field.

If the ultimate goal is to develop leaders to go on to greater achievement in life and to improve our local programs, this group is indeed champions. Stay tuned for match results. As always, notes of encouragement are welcome in the form of comments.

Mexico rebounds to defeat USA, details below.

USA implemented an effective strategy in the first half, applying full pressure after luring mexico in by giving them a free first pass. The US countered and hit the post three consecutive times. These misses would come back to haunt the US. Mexico found the lead with a penalty kick we are still struggling to understand. As the US pressed to get the goal back they were beaten by the counters they hoped to have for themselves. Credit to to the US player for hard effort and good attitude despite losing their goal scoring touch. Revolorio who scored 15 in the first four has only added one since. He has seen more limited action due to a knee and ankle injury.

Top scorer

Jorge Revolorio was living in a park at age 19 in LA. That was last fall. Since then he's been playing street soccer, taken a job at Casey's house, enrolled in college classes, and oh yeah, he just scored the second and third goals to tie and then beat france in the homeless world cup. In fact revolorio has scored 14 goals in 5 games against great teams. In fact none of us noticed how many he scored until we tallied it. The draw for round tqo will be posted tonight.

Match details

The game started as a chest match both teams playing smart possesion soccer. As US defensive lapse let to an easy first goal and then an offensive shot rebounded for a second brazilian goal. Jorge grabbed one back for Street Soccer USA. And answered a third Brazilian goal with his second of the match. The US then rushed its opportunities and gave up a fourth goal before halftime.
The second half might have broken in favor of the americans but the US missed three good opportunities and Brazil is to good to waste chances against. SSUSA was forced to chase and the game finished 6-2. Tomorrow SSUSA needs a win from 2 games to finish top three and advance to the top half of the brackets.

Winning details

It was a test of character as street soccer usa went down two goals in the second half. Alvin Soto and Jorge Revolorio each put in two goals as the US looked to run away with a victory. Denmark clawed back adding two penalties and the first two goals of the second half. Then entered Carlos Valdez of LA for the first time. The surprise supersub scored three goals which denmark answered with only one. Then Dexter Burnett of New York took a one on one with the keeper lifting the ball slowly over the keeper. So slowly the keeper got up and had a second go at it but the ball just crossed the goal line for an 8-7 lead. Mere seconds later the game ended. Congrats to tough opponents Denmark. Street soccer will learn much. Next game is monday. Schedule will be announced tonight.
