Street Soccer Charlotte gets a special visit from US National Heather Mitts

Street Soccer 945 of the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte just ended the fall season but has kept the momentum going through the winter. Even though a first round playoff exit in local league play hurt team spirits, it has not stopped the team from turning out in numbers at each practice to work on getting better . The team has stayed busy with events at Pheiffer University and Belmont Abbey College as part of homelessness and hunger awareness week, and at Thursday's practice the team had a special visitor stop in-Heather Mitts from the US Women's National Team! Heather met fellow female player and SSUSA Rep for the Homeless World Cup 2009, Ebony Wright, and then she ran the team through a series of passing drills before the team divided up into small sides and played a king of the court competition. Heather teamed up with Ebony, new player Juneau, and volunteer Matt. The competition held nothing back giving Heather's group a challenge each time on the field. This is the beauty of street soccer programming, it doesnt matter to our team if you are new to the game, if you are old or young, or say, a professional athlete, we are all equals on the field. We just played and had fun with it. After practice we had the chance to take some photos and the team thanked her for coming out, they waited until after she left however, to talk about how cool and inspiring it was to be able to play with a pro player and how they cant wait to see the pictures so they can post them to their facebook page! Thanks to Athletes for Hope www.athletesforhope.org for helping make this happen.

Exercise helps Mental Health

Check this article
“It looks more and more like the positive stress of exercise prepares cells and structures and pathways within the brain so that they’re more equipped to handle stress in other forms,” says Michael Hopkins, a graduate student affiliated with the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory Laboratory at Dartmouth, who has been studying how exercise differently affects thinking and emotion. “It’s pretty amazing, really, that you can get this translation from the realm of purely physical stresses to the realm of psychological stressors.” Read more at the link above from this NYT piece.

an excerpt to think about

While federal officials say homelessness over all is expected to rise 10 percent to 20 percent this year, a federal survey of schools showed a 40 percent increase in the number of juveniles living on their own last year, more than double the number in 2003.

At the same time, however, many financially troubled states began sharply cutting social services last year. Though President Obama’s $787 billion economic stimulus package includes $1.5 billion to address the problem of homelessness, state officials and youth advocates say that almost all of that money will go toward homeless families, not unaccompanied youths.

“As a society, we can pay a dollar to deal with these kids when they first run away, or 20 times that in a matter of years when they become the adult homeless or incarcerated population,” said Barbara Duffield, policy director for the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth.

Sex on the street

This article describes some sophisticated pimps, but what i learned quickly in charlotte is that everything is transactional on the street, and there are lots of part time, occasional, and not quite conscious they are pimping pimps out there. It's not squalid. it's the human side of people our programs are trying to project, but sex is a refuge--often a pitiful one, a disease, a trade in poverty. We have to offer viable alternatives but we also have to understand where people are coming from.

Wildcats visit SSUSA-Charlotte at Urban Ministry Center

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team demonstrated its culinary skills for a great cause, cooking dinner for Street Soccer 945, a soccer program for the homeless, last Wednesday.

A program of the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte, Street Soccer 945 was originally founded by Davidson men’s soccer alumnus Lawrence Cann. Street Soccer 945 was the founding program of Street Soccer USA, a national network of 16 grassroots soccer programs for the homeless. Lawrence’s brother, Rob, is the current director of Street Soccer 945.

"It was a great experience to spend time with athletes from all different backgrounds,” said junior Ellie Szykowny. “By the end of the night we were singing along to an impromptu piano concert and sharing inside jokes. It's great for us to be able to make a connection with members of the Charlotte community."

The Wildcats cooked up a large meal, brought it to the Urban Ministry Center, and then dined with the street soccer team. The teams had a great time getting to know each other, sitting together by their respective positions on the field. The ‘Cats also gave the members of the soccer team water bottles with motivational quotations written on them.

"I think we were captivated by the sense of family that had developed between the Street Soccer players,” said junior Christine Rua. “There was a very obvious feeling of mutual commitment and consideration within the team that we as athletes could easily understand and connect with. The experience didn't feel like 'service' - simply put, they were letting us see inside their family and we were letting them see inside ours."

Wildcats 4-1 Upset Win Over No. 6 Duke

Street Soccer USA was honored at halftime and the crowd was great to our players. Davidson also donated a portion of proceeds to our program. They challenge other college team's to do the same!

On top of that, Davidson outclassed Duke and played like they were #6 in the country. Well done to the staff and team. The game was an inspiration.

Davidson Plays for SSUSA

Tonight Davidson College (8-1) will play #2 Duke. Davidson who beat #6 South Carolina last week, and can secure a spot in the nations top 10, most likely, with a victory.

They will also be playing for another cause, the homeless participants of Street Soccer USA. A portion of ticket sales will benefit our teams. The Charlotte team from the Urban Ministry Center will play an exhibition there at halftime.

US digs deep to end Victorious!

Chris Lodgson kisses his medal as the United States finished number 19 after a victory over Hungary in their final match. Lodgson's New York teammate, Dexter Burnett scored a hat trick and added a game winning penalty kick to cap a come from behind victory. Ebony Wright started the match and was afterwards recognized by the announcer as one of only four females to integrate the tournament.

The game followed a frustratingly familiar theme for the United States: Pretty build-up, great hustle, and no ability to put the ball away. Trailing 3-1 at the half, the team still felt confident since it had the better of the play. Dexter took control and defied his 47 years with incredible work rate.

The night before we all sat around the dinner table in a Milan cafe and shared our unforgettable moments of the trip. Some went back to our exhibitions in New York with the Promotion Factory and our ceremony at Cipriani's, some of the players couldn't help but mention the beautiful italian they had met, and everyone agreed our trip to Venice was beyond anything they could have imagined. Still it was the victory over France that most people agreed was the best expression of all we had accomplished and overcome together as a group. That victory against a goliath-like opponent in a must win game after trailing by early goals validated everyone. When we won today, the pride on the our faces, the hugs, and rejoicing evinced the self esteem and sense of accomplishment that this group deservedly feels. Thanks to all of you who made this possible. We look forward to keeping you updated going forward with a few profiles and more photos of our athletes and their rise out of homelessness and poverty.

The final match of the Homeless World Cup 2009 is moments away. Portugal will play the Ukraine in a match televised on Italian TV.

US to compete for 19th place in the World

Street Soccer USA and it's team from homeless service agencies across the country have already done better than any previous American team. Despite frustrations in the latest matches, The US team has secured their spot in the top 20, and will battle Germany or Hungry for the 19th spot.

Meanwhile, top prize is favored to go to the world soccer powers Brazil, restoring order to the Homeless World Cup which has been dominated in the past by non World Cup winner: Russia, Poland, Scotland, Afghanistan.

Our players have once again raised the bar for US participation. So far each year the team has climbed. In 2005 they finished last, in the 2006, penultimate, in 2007 31st, and last year 29th. The US has risen despite an increased level of competition overall in the tournament. Congrats to our players. Cheer them on as they strive to finish strong tomorrow.

USA Wins to secure place in top 20!

Carlos Valdez was sharp again today, adding three goals to Antoine Lagarde's two and one from Alvin Soto for the USA. The US played a tough Austrian squad, but persevered in the end. Alvin and Carlos each had chances to win it with easy shots in the final seconds, but neither could find the net.

Wes Colter, again, was called upon to rescue the Street Soccer USA. Antoine was there to help. Antoine scored the first goal and Austria was not denied either. Both Carlos and Alvin failed to convert, but two big saves from Colter gave Antoine another opportunity, which he made good on. The cycle repeated itself, and on the third go around Antoine put the US up for the third consecutive time. Colter forced the Austrian penalty taker wide right, and though he passed the keeper, he couldn't steer his shot between the posts. The ball bounced off the wall wide right. The US team stormed onto the field victorious.

Next match will be against tent-mates South Africa. This winner goes to the final of the City of Milan Cup. On the other side of the semi-final is Germany and Malawi.

Trophy Stage

The US battles Austria today in the first round of the trophy stage. The winner will play the winner between South Africa and Romania this afternoon. The quality of all these teams is immense: While we did not qualify for the top 8 spots, many of the teams in our current bracket could have been world champions with some better luck. France, whom the US defeated in the first stage of the tournament qualified for the final eight in the Homeless World Cup championship. This shows the degree of parity. Speaking with Chris Lodgson this morning, he confirmed that the team is proud of their effort and achievement thus far. The frustration has been in losing the scoring touch, but the team also feels that they have not suffered for lack of effort or team focus.

The coaches feel likewise. A few more days to train and we might have solved a couple more problems on the pitch, but in the end we have adjusted well to the high level of competition. The structure and strategy has put the team in a good position to reach their potential on the the field.

If the ultimate goal is to develop leaders to go on to greater achievement in life and to improve our local programs, this group is indeed champions. Stay tuned for match results. As always, notes of encouragement are welcome in the form of comments.

Mexico rebounds to defeat USA, details below.

USA implemented an effective strategy in the first half, applying full pressure after luring mexico in by giving them a free first pass. The US countered and hit the post three consecutive times. These misses would come back to haunt the US. Mexico found the lead with a penalty kick we are still struggling to understand. As the US pressed to get the goal back they were beaten by the counters they hoped to have for themselves. Credit to to the US player for hard effort and good attitude despite losing their goal scoring touch. Revolorio who scored 15 in the first four has only added one since. He has seen more limited action due to a knee and ankle injury.

Top scorer

Jorge Revolorio was living in a park at age 19 in LA. That was last fall. Since then he's been playing street soccer, taken a job at Casey's house, enrolled in college classes, and oh yeah, he just scored the second and third goals to tie and then beat france in the homeless world cup. In fact revolorio has scored 14 goals in 5 games against great teams. In fact none of us noticed how many he scored until we tallied it. The draw for round tqo will be posted tonight.
